We provide professional support in Glaucoma (eye pressure).
Glaucoma is known as ” eye pressure “ or “black water disease”
with its widespread use in the society. It usually progresses with no
or very few symptoms. Although it is more likely to occur in people over
the age of 40, it is the most common cause of vision problems experienced by
people over the age of 60. It is a disease that causes irreversible vision
problems if not controlled with early diagnosis and treatment.
Glaucoma is an eye disease caused by the abnormal
increase in intraocular pressure and the destruction of the optic nerves due to
this increase. The disease begins with the obstruction of the channels
(trabecular meshwork) in the eye, which are responsible for the simultaneous
discharge of the aqueous humor fluid produced to protect and nourish the lens
of vision. Intraocular pressure increases due to insufficient excretion of
the aqueous humor and its accumulation in the eye over time. This pressure
causes a gradual decrease in the patient’s vision by pressing on the optic
nerves responsible for vision. Therefore, the accumulation of fluid in the
eye alone is not sufficient for the diagnosis of glaucoma. As a result of
the pressure on the optic nerves accompanying this condition, vision loss
should occur.
In this disease, also known as glaucoma, the accumulation of fluid in the eye is high
enough to damage the eyesight. With the accumulation of fluid over time,
the pressure on the optic nerves increases indirectly. This situation
increases the damage to the nerves responsible for vision. As the disease
progresses, the person’s visual field gradually narrows. Due to the
structure of the optic nerves, it is not possible for these nerves to renew
themselves or to be repaired by surgical intervention. Early diagnosis is
important for treatment in glaucoma.
While glaucoma does not usually show symptoms in the
early stages, it may show different symptoms in different patients. Common
symptoms are as follows:
Pain and headache around the eyes that occur due to the
level change of intraocular fluid during the day
Feeling of tightness and stiffness in the eye,
Pain when pressing on the eye,
pain in the forehead,
Sudden or rapid closure of the field of view,
Nausea,
Temporary blurring of vision and halos around lights at
night due to the increase in eye pressure are noted by some patients with eye
pressure.
Along with the complaint of severe headache, which
usually manifests itself in the morning hours, a problem such as blurred vision
at certain times may accompany the symptoms of glaucoma. In addition,
people with a family history of eye pressure should be more sensitive to
certain symptoms and it would be beneficial to go to an ophthalmologist once a
year. Finally, people who experience acute closure of vision with severe
headache and eye pain should consult an ophthalmologist without
delay.
The diagnosis of glaucoma is made as a result of a comprehensive eye
examination by an ophthalmologist. First, the patient’s eye pressure is
measured with a tonometry device. Afterwards, a fundus examination is
performed to determine if there is any damage to the optic nerves. After
this point, multiple tests for glaucoma can be applied if deemed necessary by
the ophthalmologist. In acute glaucoma crises, the diagnosis is much
easier as the patient shows much more obvious symptoms. In such cases, the
patient is treated urgently. Because the later the intervention, the
greater the loss of the patient’s visual field. The methods and tests used
in the diagnosis of eye pressure are as follows:
Measuring eye pressure
Examination of the drainage angle of the eye,
Eye nerve examination (ophthalomoscopy),
Computer vision field test,
OCT,
A diagnosis of glaucoma can be provided by applying some or all of the tests such as HRT.
The damage to the eye and therefore our vision due to
glaucoma is irreversible, but it can be controlled. Various eye drops and
oral medications as support, laser operations and surgical interventions are
applied to prevent and control the progression of the disease. Only one of
the aforementioned treatments can be applied, or there may be complicated
applications depending on the patient’s condition.
SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) application is a very fast and practical
method applied in the treatment of eye pressure. It is carried out in the
practice environment where there is no surgical intervention. Treatment
begins with numbing the eye using anesthetic drops. In this way, the patient
does not feel any pain or pain. Afterwards, laser beams are given between
40-60 seconds to the trabecular meshwork that drains the aqueous fluid in the
eye. In this way, the narrowed and clogged channels in the eye are
widened, through which the aqueous fluid is discharged to the outside. While
SLT can show its effect after 1-3 months at the latest. In the vast
majority of glaucoma patients, the eye pressure drops by 25-30%. Laser therapy for eye pressure It shows its effect
between 1-5 years and should be repeated after this period. SLT
application can be applied to patients who do not get results from drug
treatment or who have complaints about the side effects of the drugs they use.
