Operations performed in the general surgery unit are
performed in rooms with special ventilation systems, in environments where the
necessary equipment is fully available. Operations performed with
completely sterilized clothes and gloves, together with surgical nurses and
assistants, are performed after the patient is completely put to sleep by
giving anesthesia. The patient, who is connected to breathing devices
during the operation, is operated by applying local or general anesthesia
according to the type of surgery.

Regional anesthesia (regional) is performed by numbing
the nerves in the area to be operated. For example, spinal and epidural
anesthesia is performed by numbing the waist down by administering drugs to the
waist and spinal cord area, while if it is to be performed only in the hands
and feet, it is performed by numbing the surrounding nerves going to that
area. Minor surgeries to be performed in the form of biopsy are performed
under local anesthesia by injecting drugs into the operation area and numbing it.

Applications

Many surgical interventions, which are included in the

applications. General surgery mostly performs the required surgical
operations by applying the resection surgery method. In the resection
method, the organ is partially or completely removed. The interventions
made are interpreted by adding the suffix –ectomy to the end of the removed
organs.

For example, gastrectomy refers to the complete removal
of the stomach, while the complete removal of the stomach is called total
gastrectomy, and the removal of half is called hemigastrectomy. In the
application called excision, a structure or tumor is completely removed from
the body. Lymph node excision and wide tumor excision are among the
surgical operations that can be given as examples of these applications.

In order to ensure the continuity of the hollow organs
and structures in the body, the applications of opening to each other are
called anastomosis. The surgical operation is defined by adding the suffix
ostomy to the end of the names of the organs to be stitched together during the
operation. For example, the operation of suturing and mouthing the small
intestine to the stomach is expressed as gastrojejunostomy.

Another application performed by general surgeons is the
application of mouthing a hollow organ, called stoma or ostomy, to the
skin. In such applications, food is injected into the stomach of the
patient using a tube, and the patient’s feeding or toilet needs are provided in
this way.

One of the general surgery applications is Ligation
operations. Examples of such applications are vascular ligation to stop
bleeding or tube ligation to prevent pregnancy.

The practice of treating the tissues taken from the sick
individuals or others by transferring them to the problem area is expressed as
a graft. For example, transferring a skin graft taken from another part of
the body of a patient with a burn on his body to the problem area or performing
bypass operations by changing the problematic vessels can be given as examples
of such applications.

Another general surgery application is the application
called prosthesis, which is the operation of damaged or missing body structures
by using artificial materials. Synthetic patches in hernia surgeries or
arm, leg, eye, knee, hip prostheses are examples of these applications.
