Interventional radiology is an emerging subspecialty
which provides minimal surgical procedures under imaging guidance (angiography,
computerized tomography or ultrasonography) and without open surgery and
operating room.
Interventional radiologists using special needles, tubes
and wires, target different diseases at different organs navigating inside the
vessels or directly percutaneously.
At Anadolu Medical Center, all complicated interventions
are performed by interventional radiologists granted privillege with
international boards (European Board of Interventional Radiology, EBIR).
Interventional procedures carried out at Interventional
Radiology Department of Anadolu Medical Center are summarized as following:
Sampling of different
organs safe and efficiently for diagnosis.
Removing of fluid collections like, ascites, bile, cysts,
abscess, etc in body parts.
Vascular treatments: Arterial or venous stenosis/occlusions
can be opened with stents and balloons in other organs similar to heart
vessels. Sometimes interventional radiologists may aim to close the vessels
which may cause hemorrhage for eg. in lung, intestines etc. Vascular
malformations and varices which may pose may cause serious health complications
along cosmetic problems are also managed endvascularly.
Oncologic treatments: Many tumors can be treated by heating,
freezing or chemical ablative methods. Another standard therapy which is mostly
used in primer and metastatic liver tumors is blocking of the tumor vessels
using bland particles (embolization) or chemotherapy agents (chemoembolization)
or radioactive isotopes (radio embolization).
Neurologic treatments: Acute stroke can be treated angiographic
ally by removing the clot in brain vessels, if diagnosed within 6 hours.
Besides one of the most life-threatening and debilitating problem that caused
by cerebral aneurysms – related brain hemorrhage managed with interventional
neuroembolization therapy
Embolization means blocking of the vessels, this idea can be
used by interventional radiologist to treat the abnormal vessels, aneurysms,
tumor, trauma etc. with particles, coils, liquid agents or even stents.
Ballooning of arteries supplying different organs may cause life-threatening
bleeding, this is especially true for cerebral aneurysms because brain is in a
closed box, if left untreated.
Radio embolization is similar to chemoembolization, as it
starts with inserting a catheter through groin up to the vessels feeding the
tumor in the liver. Here, radioactive microspheres (Ytrium-90) are delivered to
liver tumors angiographic ally. This treatment permits a high dose of radiation
inside tumors on the other hand, nearby healthy tissue receives minimal
radiation.

Having started to render service in June 2010 within the structure of the hospital, the Bone Marrow Transplantation Center performs bone marrow transplants for 22 patients at the same time.
