Description

Diabetic retinopathy

Eye problems that may occur as a complication of diabetes
in people with diabetes are called diabetic eye disease.

Diabetic retinopathy: It is the damage that develops in
the blood vessels in the network layer called retina.

Cataract: It can also be defined as the loss of
transparency of the lens of the eye by fogging.

Glaucoma: Due to the increase in intraocular pressure,
the optic nerve is damaged and reduces vision. People with diabetes have
twice the risk of developing glaucoma than healthy people.

What Exactly Is Diabetic Retinopathy? Is It Seen in Every Diabetic Patient?

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most important vision
problems today. It occurs as a result of changes in retinal blood vessels.

Since the retina is a light sensitive layer, it
should not have any disease in order for the visual function to function
properly. Different types of damage occur in diabetic retinopathy, the
structure of blood vessels is disrupted and small bubbles occur. It causes
bleeding and leakage of fluid into the surrounding tissues.

In diabetic retinopathy, vision loss does not
develop at first, and if the disease is intervened before it progresses, bad
results can be prevented.

Not every diabetic patient gets diabetic
retinopathy, but every diabetic patient is at risk. Regular eye exams
should be done every year.

What Are the Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy?

Mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy: In this
early stage, bubbles called microaneurysms have formed in the retinal vessels.

Moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy: Bubbles have increased in the retinal
vessels and occlusions have occurred in the vessels.

Severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy: Vascular occlusions and hemorrhages are
increased, and oxygen deficiency is evident in the retina.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy: Oxygen deficiency and malnutrition in the retina have
increased and new and unhealthy vessel formation has started in the retina by
sending danger signals to the brain. These newly formed vessels are very
delicate and can cause bleeding and sudden vision loss at any time.

How Is Diabetic Retinopathy Treated?

If there is no macular edema in the early stage, no
treatment is required. In order to prevent the progression of diabetic
retinopathy, blood sugar and cholesterol values should
be kept under control.

If unwanted new vessels have formed in the
retina (proliferative diabetic retinopathy), laser can be applied to the entire
retina.

Laser treatment should be performed before
bleeding begins, if there is severe bleeding, laser treatment is not
appropriate.

If the bleeding is very intense, it is necessary
to surgically clean the bleeding with vitrectomy operation. With
vitrectomy, the bleeding inside the eye is completely cleared and laser
operation is applied.
