Definition

There are 7 backbones in our neck and 5 in our
waist. There are cartilage structures called discs between these
bones. The discs contribute to the mobility of the spine and help
distribute the loads on the spine in a balanced way. Neck and lumbar
hernias are diseases that occur as a result of the deterioration and overflow
of these discs, which act like a shock absorber.

Results

Pain and limitation of movement are the main symptoms of
waist and neck hernia. The source of the pain is the pressure exerted by
the overflowing disc on neighboring tissues, especially the spinal cord and
nerve roots. Some chemicals secreted in tissues whose blood flow is
impaired due to this pressure causes pain. The pain that occurs reflexively

life, sitting for a long time, positions that will keep the spine in an
unsuitable position for a long time (computer use, watching TV, working in
industrial production, etc.), improper weight-bearing are the most common
causes of disease. In addition to mechanical factors, disc wear caused by
aging, genetic defects in the cartilage structure and traumas can be considered
among other hernia causes.

Diagnosis

The most important factor in the diagnosis of waist and
neck hernias is the doctor’s examination. All imaging methods, especially
MRI, should be used only for confirming the diagnosis or for differential
diagnosis. It is not correct to diagnose hernia using only imaging
methods. However, unfortunately, many patients today are misdiagnosed as a
hernia.

Treatment

The vast majority of waist and neck hernias can be
treated without surgical intervention. Surgical operations are included in
the treatment of very few patients, especially in patients with signs of
stroke. Among the non-surgical treatment methods, drug therapies, physical
therapy applications (hot applications, electric currents, ultrasound
applications, laser, etc.), local injections, manipulation applications,
exercise physiotherapy are the most commonly used treatment options. In
