What Is Hematology?
It is the science field that researches the structures, duties and diseases of the blood cells and the organs such as bone marrow producing blood cells.
What Are Blood Diseases?
Cells in the blood are classified in 3 groups: red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leucocytes) and blood platelet (thrombocytes). From these cells, the red blood cells are responsible for the carrying oxygen from lungs to tissues; leucocytes are responsible for the protection of the body from microbes; trombocytes are responsible for providing the blood coagulation. Anemia, leucemia and bleeding disorders may occur in relation to these cells. Before the birth, blood cells are produced by the spleen and liver; after the birth, by stem cells at the middle part of the bones. Adenoids and spleen also work with white blood cells to protect the body from microbes. Besides, Hematology Department deals with the diseases related to bone marrow or adenoids.
These disease groups can be summarised as below:
Cancerization of the cells in bone marrow or adenoids (leucemias, lymphomas)
Disruption of the blood cell productions in bone marrow (anemia types, decrease of leucocyte and thrombocyte values)
Increase of the blood cell lysis
Disruption of the blood clotting (hemophilias)
Clotting of the blood in vascular system
