We provide professional support in Facial Paralysis.
Facial paralysis is a disease with weakness of the
muscles on one side of the face. Facial paralysis basically occurs for two
reasons: the first is as a result of the damage to the body of the nerve cells
that go to the facial muscles in the brain, and the second is the damage to the
main nerve of the facial muscles. To put it more simply, there are centers
controlling the nerve in the brain, if the problem originates from this center,
it is usually accompanied by dizziness, epilepsy, paralysis of one side of the
body. It is very important to diagnose which type of facial paralysis you
have.
Control weakness in mouth, eye and forehead movements on
the affected side is the main finding. However, there may be complaints
such as decreased tears, twitching in facial muscles, a different taste
sensation in the tongue, speech disorder, excessive drooling and tear
production, pain in the ear or around the jaw. If any of the conditions
such as confusion, dizziness, balance problems, epileptic seizures, weakness in
the arms or legs on one side of the body accompany it, it is understood that
there is a brain-related problem and the treatment algorithm is completely
changed. Contrary to Bell’s paralysis, the ability to blink and wrinkle
the forehead on the affected side is preserved in patients with facial
paralysis due to stroke.
In facial palsy diagnosed with Bell’s paralysis, treatment is mostly started with cortisone group drugs,
which studies have shown that it has a positive contribution to recovery. However,
physical therapy applications such as acupuncture and muscle strengthening with
therapeutic electrical stimulation contribute positively to recovery. Corneal
damage that may occur due to dry eye must be prevented.
