Echocardiography (also called echo for short)
is a diagnostic and research technique that allows to examine the structure,
pathologies and functions of the heart, which is a moving organ, using
ultrasonic sound waves.
Ultrasound (ultrasonic waves) is used in echocardiography. Ultrasound
waves are sound beyond the hearing limit of the human ear. These sound
waves are sent to the heart with the help of a sensitive instrument in the form
of a tube that is held by the hand and produced by the patient’s chest
(tranducer). Sound waves return to the instrument through the heart walls,
muscles, valves. Different tissues reflect sound waves in different ways. Thus,
the sound waves returning from the heart are converted into pictures with the
computer, and these images can be viewed on the monitor as well as printed on
paper if desired (with the same technique, other organs of the body are also
examined with ultrasonic sound waves.

blood.)

It has absolutely no harm or side effects on patients and can be
applied easily. The patient
does not feel pain during the procedure . The
disadvantages of Eko are; The tester’s ability affects the accuracy of
test results. In some people, echo images are not good due to the person’s
structure (the person is not echogenic) and sufficient images may not be
obtained. Some parts of the heart may not look so good.
In addition, with the Stress ECO performed with drugs, information
can be obtained about the coronary heart vessels and the vitality of the heart
muscle. With color Doppler echocardiography, information about the
pressures of the intracardiac chambers, the degrees of valve insufficiency
(leakage) is obtained.
In some cases, it may be necessary to obtain more detailed
information by transesophageal (through the esophagus) echo (abbreviated as
TEE). In this examination, the throat is anesthetized and a pinky-finger-thick
tube is inserted into the esophagus, and the heart is examined in more detail
from the posterior side (similar to the endoscopy used in the diagnosis of
stomach and esophagus diseases). Fasting should be done before TEE
examination.
Our center, which was established in 1992, started to monitor the electrolyte of our patients for 24 hours with portable devices that can send ECG signals over the phone for the first time in our country. In this system, the ECGs taken from the patient are instantly evaluated on the computer screen and if an abnormal situation is detected, the patient’s doctor is immediately contacted and informed. At the same time, the patient’s ECG is instantly transmitted to the doctor by fax. When necessary, the patient is transferred to the nearest equipped hospital. Cardiologists were serving 24 hours a day in the center. Redline transtelephonic monitoring system, which served mostly for follow-up purposes when it was established, was preferred in the following years for long-term monitoring of arrhythmias that could not be diagnosed with 24-hour Holter. In addition, 12 derivation devices have been given to doctors and polyclinics in different parts of Turkey; Instant comments were made with the signals sent from the place, information was transferred to urgently needed interventions and hundreds of patients’ lives were saved.
Our organization also brought a 24-hour holter to our country alongside the transtelephonic holter, and continued to make its name known in the cardiology community as the first holter center in private.
