What is a Comprehensive eye exam?

Visiting an eye health professional at least once a year is crucial even
if you have no complaints at all for many eye and vision problems, such as glaucoma,
present with no obvious signs or symptoms most of the time. When the symptoms
start to be seen, serious damage has already occured to optic nerves which is
why early detection and treatment are keys to preventing the loss of vision
from glaucoma.

For infants and children, most childhood ophthalmic disorders may not be
easy to detect early on. Infants, in particular, may not give verbal ocular
complaints therefore comrehensive eye exam is not to be overlooked. Undetected
pediatric ophthalmic disorders may cause potential visual impairments.

Symptoms of Some diseases first appear in the eye, hence having your eyes
examined on a regular basis help detecting such diseases as diabetes,behcet
disease or Rheumatologic diseases.

What your comprehensive eye exam includes:

Eyelid examination: examination around the eye; looking for any
bumps,drooping or fat bulging on the eyelid.

visual acuity: measure how clearly you can see out of each eye, reading
what is on the chart, evaluations of depth perception, color vision, the way your
pupils respond to light and peripheral vision.

refraction: determine the lens power you will need, nearsightedness,
farsightedness, astigmatism.

glaucoma: disease of the optic nerve which is a leading cause of blindness
in many countries. Until the damage has already occurred glaucoma does not
present any noticeable symptoms.

biomicroscope: also called slit lamp exam. Examine all areas of your eye.
Help diagnose some conditions like detached retina, an important layer of
tissue at the back of the eye becomes detached from its base.

eye muscle movements: six eye muscles if not work properly may cause cross
eye condition (strabismus).

Fundus of your eye examination, your eye doctor may put drops in your eyes.
optic nerve, vessels of your eye, areas of your eye in the back.

What is Comprehensive pediatrice eye exam?

Most common childhood ophthalmic disorders include childhood cataract,
refractive errors (myopia, hypermetropia,) glaucoma, tumors, blocked tear duct.
All children should have comprehensive eye exam on a regular basis starting
from birth. First examination is performed at birth in neonatal care unit by podiatrists.
After that at the sixth and eighteenth month an eye exam by an eye doctor. The
infant can be examined under general anesthesia if the complicated procedures
require so.
