We provide professional support in Yellow spot treatment.
Yellow spot disease (macular degeneration) is one of the leading
causes of vision loss in people over 60 years old in Turkey and all over the
world. The most common cause of the disease is genetic predisposition. Causes
such as smoking and malnutrition can also pave the way for the emergence of the
disease. Unless the disease is controlled, it causes progressive vision
loss. People with the disease have difficulty in doing daily tasks such as
reading, driving, watching TV.
Yellow spot disease (age-related macular degeneration) is the
loss of central vision as a result of the progression of receptor cells in the
retina layer of the eye, in the macula region (yellow spot), which is
responsible for clear vision. The
macula area is located behind our eyes and is the area
that allows us to see details. Thanks to the function this region
performs, we are able to read books, pass the thread through the eye of the
needle and do many other tasks that require a fine detailed view.
Central vision loss begins with the death of nerve cells
in the center of the visual field in people with macular degeneration. This loss of
vision, which starts in the center, expands towards the edges over
time. While patients see a dark spot in the center, they also see a ring
at the edges.
Age-related macular degeneration is also divided into two types in
terms of its development mechanism.
Dry Macular Degeneration: This is the most common type of macular degeneration. This
type is observed in 85% of yellow spot patients. Small yellow substances
called drusen accumulate in the macular region of the retina and damage the
macula, thus causing vision loss.
Wet Macular Degeneration: This type is seen in 10-15 percent
of yellow spot patients. It is caused by the enlargement of abnormal blood
vessels under the macula. The structure of the macula is damaged due to
bleeding and extravasated fluids. This can cause vision loss.
Apart from these two types, juvenile macular degeneration known as Stargardt disease
constitutes the type of macular degeneration seen in children and young people.
The retina layer has its own vascular layer. This
layer is still fed by another, richer vascular layer beneath it. Between
these two layers is a thin membrane layer that acts as a filter. In the
macular region, harmful substances formed by light and other factors are
cleaned in this membrane layer. The cleaned harmful substances are
transmitted to the rich layer below and are removed from this region with the
help of the circulation system. Harmful substances that could not be
removed from this area for a reason that has not been fully known until today,
accumulate in this area and initiate some negative events for the visual
system. Thus, the yellow spot disease begins.
In age-related macular degeneration, cells in the macula
are gradually lost. That’s why the disease does not suddenly give very
noticeable symptoms. Different people may experience different
symptoms. In some cases, symptoms may occur in only one eye and there is
no problem in the other eye. In macular degeneration, it is easier to
diagnose only if both eyes are affected. Initial symptoms are pale colors,
blurry writing, and straight lines appearing as oblique. yellow spot disease As it
progresses, a dark dark region occurs in the middle of the point of view, the
problems of blurring and oblique viewing of straight lines increase. In
addition, more light is needed when dealing with close reading and fine
detailed work. Difficulty adapting to dimly lit environments. As the
disease progresses, these problems make it impossible for people to carry out
their daily activities alone after a while.
