We provide professional support in Brain surgery (neurosurgery).
The spine consists of vertebrae connected by cartilages we
call discs. There are five vertebrae in the waist. Inside the discs,
there is a jelly-like soft section called nucleus pulposus, and a harder
fibrous layer called anulus fibrosis.
Disc degeneration is one of the most peculiar
factors. As the age progresses, the veins that feed the discs
decrease. However, the rate of water contained in the discs also
decreases. Vascular diseases, diabetes and smoking accelerate degeneration
by negatively affecting the amount and quality of blood flow to the disc, and
thus its nutrition. All this is accompanied by the degeneration caused by
the mechanical forces exerted on the disc.
The most important external factors are unconscious
movements and trauma during daily activities.
Drug treatment and bed rest are recommended in the first stage
for patients who do not require surgery. In some patients, the next step
may be physical therapy. Exercise can be given in the appropriate period. Psychotherapy
can be done if necessary.
Surgical treatment aims to eliminate the pressure of the torn
disc on the nerves and spinal cord. Which of the methods such as classical
discectomy, microdiscectomy or endoscopic discectomy will be applied is
determined by the surgeon by evaluating the patient’s age, anatomical structure
and medical condition.
Depending on their general condition, the patients stand up
8-16 hours after the operation and are discharged on the evening of the same
day or after one night follow-up in the hospital.
The operation of the nerve tissue that develops pressure
before the damage is fully established, the patient’s normal weight, the
absence of diabetes and hypertension, the patient’s psychological level to
understand the treatment principles and the postoperative rehabilitation
program positively affect the outcome of the surgery.
In the first days following the surgery, there will be
moderate pain in the lower back. Pain medication is usually
sufficient. After a successful back surgery, patients get rid of leg pain
complaints as soon as possible.
Patients who return to their daily lives after 7-10 days
of bed rest are followed up with a waist exercise program after the 4th
week. Although there are no dietary restrictions, we warn our patients not
to gain weight.
