COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease = Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is a progressive lung disease that constricts
the airways and prevents the people it affects from breathing freely.
COPD is a more common disease than thought, it is the 3rd
disease that causes the most death in the world and in Turkey. In our
society, one out of every 5 people over the age of 40 has COPD.
Approximately 3-5 million COPD patients only 300-500
thousand know that they have the disease.
Worldwide, deaths from COPD are 2.9 million
annually. Since COPD patients are in the older group, exacerbations and
other accompanying diseases (heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer, sleep
disorders) contribute to the severity of COPD.
COPD can be found in smokers over the age of 40, workers
in dusty-smoky workplaces, people who use wood, dung, dried plant wastes for
cooking or heating, people who have cough, phlegm and shortness of breath for
long years, and these people can go to a healthcare facility. They should have
a respiratory test and a chest radiograph. Thus, if the disease can be
diagnosed early, it can be stopped and patients can spend the rest of their
lives without trouble. COPD often goes undiagnosed until advanced, and
many COPD patients suffer and die in vain.
The diagnosis of COPD can be made easily with the breath
measurement test, which is a simple and painless test. Early diagnosis of
COPD will reduce disability and mortality rates from the
disease. Therefore, if at least one of the complaints of chronic cough,
sputum and shortness of breath is present in people over the age of 40, smoking
or drinking and / or in dusty environments due to professional or environmental
environment, the person should be seen by the physician and have a breath
measurement test.
