The Yeditepe University Hospital Dizziness / Vertigo
Clinic investigates the underlying causes of dizziness and lack of equilibrium
and offers personalized solutions accordingly.
Dizziness is a symptom, not a disease. The word “dizzy” encompasses multiple descriptions of symptoms –
lightheadedness, swimming sensation, wooziness, unsteadiness, floating,
imbalance, tipping, spinning or vertigo.
The causes of dizziness are as varied as their clinical descriptions and can include different
structures, from the inner ear to the brain. Feelings of dizziness or vertigo
may be caused by an infection or disease in the inner ear. For example, one
possible cause is labyrinthitis, which is inflammation of the inner ear.
Meniere’s disease and benign positional vertigo are other inner ear problems
that can trigger dizziness.
Neurological causes of dizziness include multiple sclerosis, stroke, migraine and, rarely, tumors.
Dizziness can be caused by fatigue, stress, fever, low blood sugar, anemia,
head injury and heart or circulation problems. It can also be caused by some
medications. Some psychological problems can cause dizziness. Examples of such
problems are depression, agoraphobia (fear of open spaces), and
hyperventilation (rapid, shallow breathing that may happen when you are feel
anxious).
Yeditepe University Hospital Dizziness Clinic evaluates patients with complaints of any type of
dizziness. Dizziness generally refers to a feeling of spatial disorientation.
Common types of dizziness include vertigo, lightheadedness, and imbalance.
Disorders of the nervous system, including the vestibular system, are
emphasized in this clinic. Common conditions diagnosed in this clinic include:
benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular neuritis (i.e.,
labyrinthitis), Ménière’s disease, cerebellar ataxia syndromes, cerebrovascular
disorders, chronic dizziness and migraine-associated dizziness.
Yeditepe University Hospital Dizziness Clinic offers a comprehensive range of treatment options to
address the underlying causes of dizziness. Treatment for dizziness can vary
from a simple adjustment of your medications to different medical, surgical and
rehabilitation approaches. The Dizziness Clinic offers detailed clinical
evaluation, ENG/VNG and MRI testing, Vestibular Rehabilitation and Balance
Assessment and Training Programs. Conservative management using Vestibular
Rehabilitation works by re-training the brain to adapt to and re-organize
conflicting signals it receives related to the body’s balance and motion. The
treatment of balance dysfunction is based on the appropriate determination of
the origin of the dysfunction. Some patients need both vestibular
rehabilitation and balance retraining, while others need just one form of
therapy.
