Bowel cleansing should be done before colonoscopy. A
good bowel cleansing is essential in order to examine the layer covering the
inner surface of the large intestine. For this reason, the doctor may
recommend a fiber food restriction a day or two before the procedure. In
addition, special solutions that are taken orally and provide cleansing in a
short time are given for bowel cleansing. During this period, there will
be excessive water loss, so it is necessary to drink plenty of water. (The
doctor explains the bowel cleansing in detail.)
It is the direct visual inspection of your esophagus
(esophagus), stomach and part of your small intestine (duodenum). This
examination is performed by swallowing a long and flexible tube with a small
diameter from your mouth, bright light at the end. Your doctor looks for
any illnesses by looking at the images reflected on the screen. If
necessary, small tissue samples (biopsy) can be taken for more detailed
laboratory analysis. Tissue samples are taken painlessly with the
endoscope with the help of forceps.
Some treatments can be done with the endoscope. For
example, expanding strictures, removing tumors and foreign bodies called
polyps, stopping bleeding vessels and ulcers by burning or injecting tissue
hardening agents.
To get a clear image, your stomach should be
empty. Therefore, you will be asked not to eat or drink anything at least
6 hours before the test. If you are diabetic, delay your medication until
after the examination. Please do not hesitate to tell the doctor or nurse
if you have any allergies to medications or if you have any contagious disease
such as jaundice. Doctors will also want to know the results of your
previous endoscopies. If you have any concerns or questions at this stage,
do not be afraid to ask. Also, remove your glasses, contact lenses and
dentures beforehand.
You will lie on your left side on the endoscopy table in
the examination room. The nurse will be with you throughout the procedure. A
local anesthetic medication will be sprayed to numb your throat. Sometimes
an injection can be made from the hip to calm you down and keep you in a light
sleep, and if necessary, it can be done under anesthesia. A plastic
mouthpiece will be placed between your teeth to keep your mouth slightly open
and to protect your teeth.
The doctor will pass the endoscope through your mouth and
throat and guide it down into your stomach. Meanwhile, the endoscope does
not cause any pain and does not prevent you from breathing. It takes 5
minutes to examine the entire stomach. As you adapt, the examination time
will be shorter. During the procedure, air can be given to your stomach so
that the doctor can see it better. The air will be recovered at the end of
the process.
After the procedure, you will rest in the resting room
for at least 30 minutes. Since your throat is locally anesthetized, do not
take any solid or liquid food until your swallowing reflex returns to normal
(usually for half an hour). At the end of this period, you can eat your
normal meal. After the examination, there may be numbness and pain in your
throat. You may also feel a little bloated if there is air in your
stomach. All of these ailments are temporary and do not require treatment.
If sedatives have been administered, you will need an
assistant to take you home. When you get home, it is important that you
spend the rest of the day at rest. Sedation can take longer than you
think. In addition, you should not drive, use construction equipment, make
important decisions, or drink alcohol.
