Injection Therapy

It is a treatment method for applying certain drugs
directly to the problem area instead of using them orally. It is used in
the treatment of many painful syndromes, especially motion system diseases and
rheumatic diseases. Nowadays, the most important drugs used locally by
injection are:

Cortisone medications

Local anesthetics

Of these two types of drugs, the most debated one is cortisone drugs.

Cortisone drugs can be used alone or in combination with
local anesthetics to treat a wide variety of painful conditions. For
example, it is possible to use cortisone drugs for painful syndromes in the
hands and feet, fibromyalgia, conditions with limitation of movement such as
frozen shoulder, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, disc hernias in the waist
and neck, muscle spasms, fibromyalgia and some joint disorders. Cortisone
injections can also be made into the joint in acute stages of rheumatic
diseases. However, there are some indispensable conditions in this
treatment method:

This should be done by an experienced physician,

Sterile conditions should be observed.

It should definitely be known that the disease in the joint is not microbial,

It should not be repeated if the desired result cannot be
obtained even though it has been done once or twice.

It should not be done in the early period in knee
arthrosis, namely calcification, which is one of the most common causes of knee
pain.

It should not be done if tears are suspected in the joint
or surrounding structures.

If these conditions are followed, cortisone injections
into the joint or around the joint are a very effective treatment method and
can be applied together with other drugs and physical therapy methods.

In recent years, another injection method for arthrosis
joints has been developed. As is known, arthrosis, or joint calcification,
is a condition that occurs as a result of the erosion of the cartilage between
the bones. As a result of abrasion, the cartilage surface deteriorates and
the amount of joint fluid that feeds the cartilage is reduced. In order to
compensate for these losses, it is possible to administer drugs with hyaluronic
acid into the joint by injection and partially repair the damage to the
cartilage. These drugs, which are usually made from cock comb or
synthetically obtained, are applied three times consecutively at one-week
intervals and can be repeated every 6 months. Since it can be applied with
other treatment methods, it is a form preferred by patients. Here, too, it
is imperative to pay attention to the conditions in cortisone injections.

Sometimes, without any medication, an injection can be
made to remove the excessively increased joint fluid. The purpose of this
treatment method, called joint puncture, is to relieve the joint by draining
the joint fluid that increases as a result of trauma or rheumatic diseases and
to remove the harmful substances accumulated in this fluid from the
environment. This procedure must be performed under sterile conditions by
an experienced physician and the patient must be followed up after the injection. In
doubtful cases, the joint fluid taken is sent for analysis and it is
investigated whether there is inflammation in it. Under normal conditions,
this procedure should not be done without excessive increase in joint fluid,
which is vital for the joint. Otherwise, more harm than good will
occur. Therefore, the knowledge and experience of the physician who will
decide on this method is very important.

In addition to medicated injection methods, there is
another method of treatment that is applied to painful points by only sticking
a needle without giving any medication. In this method called “dry
needle therapy”, needles are inserted and removed from the painful area
without giving any medication. The aim is to reduce the sensitivity of
painful nerve endings in that area and to prevent pain transmission. This
treatment method, which is similar to acupuncture treatment, which has been
successfully applied for thousands of years in the Far East, has become quite
common in Western countries in recent years. There are no side effects due
to drugs for which you are not injected. There is no harm in using it with
other treatments and physical therapy methods. It is an effective
treatment method in the treatment of painful joint diseases, especially in fibromyalgia,
waist and neck hernias, painful muscle spasms.

Another similar treatment method is
“Mesotherapy”. It is a treatment method performed by injecting
small amounts of local anesthetic agents into the body at certain points with
small tip injectors. Since the amount of the drug used is very small, side
effects related to the drug are not observed. During the application, it
is necessary to pay attention to sterile conditions, and to be applied to the
areas with suspected inflammation and close to open wounds.

Another injection treatment method that is applied
similarly to mesotherapy but using dextrose solution instead of local
anesthetics is “Prolotherapy”. This type of treatment, which is
applied around the painful area with small-tip injectors, should also be
applied by experienced physicians. Painful ailments such as chronic
rheumatic diseases, waist and neck pains, muscle spasms and fibromyalgia are
the most common cases.
