We provide professional support in Neck Pains – Neck Hernia.
of the most common causes of neck pain, neck hernia, is the rupture of the
fibers around the disc structure between the neck vertebrae and the inner disc
structure (Nucleus Pulposus) protruding into the nerve canal.
Occupational groups that put a lot of burden on their necks such
as surgeons and dentists, curtain makers, drivers and secretaries, who work at
computers for a long time, have a high rate of cervical disc disease.
The most common symptom of cervical hernia is neck pain. Pain
increases with movements of the neck. Neck pain is more severe in sudden
onset hernias. Neck hernia pain usually begins insidiously, but increases
over time. Pain in neck hernias can not only spread to the neck, but also
to the arm, back, hand, waist and shoulders where the nerve pressed by the
hernia reaches. Weakness may occur in the arms and hands
If there is a suspicion of neck hernia during examination, the
most preferred method to confirm the diagnosis is Magnetic Resonance (MR). Computed
Tomography (CT) can be preferred in patients with disabilities or closed-space
phobia for MRI. According to the findings of the examination, EMG is
another examination that may be requested.
The vast majority of patients with neck pain complaints can
recover with non-surgical treatments called conservative treatment (drug therapy,
physical therapy and exercise, local or regional injections). Pain relievers
and muscle relaxants can be used to reduce acute pain caused by hernia. If,
despite this, the pain does not decrease and the limitation in neck movements
continues, the physical therapy option should be considered. With physical
therapy, the muscles in the areas of pain are strengthened and the pressure on
the nerves is tried to be reduced. In severe neck pain, a short-term neck
collar may be required. Surgical consultation should be sought in cases
that last longer than 6 months and do not improve as a result of conservative
treatment and cause progressive loss of strength and gait disturbance.
In order not to worsen the cervical hernia that can be cured with a simple treatment, it is very important
to apply the correct diagnosis and treatment. For this reason, those with
cervical disc hernia should definitely consult a specialist.
