We provide professional support in Sleep Laboratory.
Sleep disorders arising from different reasons may lead
to complaints both at nighttime and daytime as well as various health problems.
Several signs of sleep disorders, such as snoring, shortness of breath during
sleep, vigilance, are considered “normal” in the society. Sleep disorders are
very important in terms of individual and social endpoints. Therefore, such
disorders must not be ignored.
The person who is suspected to have a sleep disorder
based on his/her complaints spends a night at the Sleep Laboratory. However,
this room seems like a comfortable hotel room rather than a laboratory. It is
essential that the person falls asleep with confidence. Minimum 6 hours of
sleep is recorded at the laboratory. Before starting sleep analysis, our
patient is prepared for the recording via a procedure that lasts 40 minutes. To
this end, we use electrodes placed on the patient’s head to record brain waves,
devices attached to the nose to record breathing and snoring, and cardiac
electrodes to monitor heart rate, leg and chin electrodes to monitor muscle
activation. We monitor respiratory motions with special belts attached to the
chest and abdomen, and blood oxygen and pulse with a small device attached to
the finger. The patient’s sleep is recorded with all these parameters under
video monitoring. All electrodes and strips attached to the patient do not
prevent the patient from moving.
In order for our patients to adapt to the environment and
devices, we recommend them to spend some time in the polysomnography room
before recording. When our patient feels sleepy, our polysomnography technician
turns off the lights, and in another room, he/she instantly monitors sleep
recordings transferred to the computer. When necessary, or when the patient
presses the call button, he/she is by the patient’s side. All night long,
respiratory events, leg and chin EMG, heart rhythm, blood oxygen level and
pulse, eye movements, abdominal and thoracic effort, whether snoring occurred
or not, sleep phases, lying positions of the patient are recorded
simultaneously. Our patient may resume his daily activities the next day.
