Lung Cancer Surgery

There are several types of lung cancer. Treatment for
each type of cancer can be different. Surgical procedures are mostly
performed in cancer types other than small cell lung cancer.

Surgical treatment is the most effective treatment method for
lung cancers if the disease is recognized at an early stage and the patient
does not have any obstacle for surgery. Especially in early stage lung
cancers, when the cancerous tissue can be completely removed, the life chances
of the patients can be quite prolonged. Therefore, patients with lung
cancer who are recommended surgery should definitely consult with a thoracic
surgeon in order to use these chances.

The “Lung Cancer Council” decides which treatment method will
be used in lung cancers. In our Lung Cancer Council within the Kolan
Hospital Group, Chest Diseases, Chest Surgery, Medical and Radiation

Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology and Pathology
specialists.

Surgical treatment methods;

Thoracotomy (open surgery)

Thoracoscopic surgery (closed surgery)

Congenital (Congenital) Chest Deformities (Deformities)

Chest deformities are congenital abnormalities in the bone
and muscle structure of the chest wall. The majority of these disorders,
which can be seen in varying degrees between a slight protrusion in one rib and
the heart being completely out of the rib cage, are not life-threatening and do
not cause any distress. Due to the limitation of functions, some of the
patients cause complaints such as pain in the anterior chest wall, ribs and
left breast region, palpitations in the heart after exertion, and impaired
heart rhythm.

Although they are very diverse, the most common chest
deformities are Pectus Excavatum (shoemaker breast) and Pectus Carinatum
(pigeon breast).

Pectus

Excavatum (Shoemaker Chest) Anterior chest wall is collapsed
inward. It usually occurs at birth or in the first years of life. It
becomes more prominent in the period of rapid growth at the ages of
14-15. It is the most common deformity of the chest wall. The most
common complaints are negative psychological effects due to physical appearance
disorder, “decrease in exercise capacity” due to impaired heart and lung
functions, and consequently, difficulty in sports activities compared to their
peers.

In order to remove the Pectus Excavatum (Shoemaker chest),
NUSS surgery is performed with fewer incisions, requiring less procedures for
the patient, shorter procedure time and quicker recovery after the operation.

Pectus Carinatum (Pigeon Breast)

Anterior chest is protruding. The complaints are the same
as the shoemaker chest. Pectus carinatum disorder can be corrected with
the ABRAMSON technique, which is a closed method similar to NUSS surgery.

Mediastenoscopy

Mediastinoscopy is a common method used in the staging of lung cancer and
diagnosis of other lung diseases involving lymph nodes (such as Sarcoidosis,
Tuberculosis). In addition to methods such as computed tomography and
nuclear medicine, it is a reliable procedure with definitive results.

Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS)

Video-assisted thoracoscopy is the imaging of the inside of the chest with
the help of a video camera under general anesthesia and projection of this on a
screen. After imaging the rib cage in this way, it is possible to perform
almost all operations, including biopsy and surgical resection, with the help
of various surgical instruments through the holes (ports) opened into the
chest.

Endoscopic Transthoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) (Sweating Surgery)

Sweating surgery, which is another area where thoracoscopic intervention
can be used, is applied in excessive sweating of the hands and armpits. Endoscopic
technique is a much more reliable method compared to open surgery. Under
general anesthesia, a small incision is made under the armpit.

Mediastinum Surgery

The mediastinum is the space inside the ribcage between both lungs, heart
and trachea. Different surgical techniques can be applied according to the
patients of this region.
