Eye Examination in Children

When should eye examinations be performed in children?

Eye examination in children should be done regularly,
starting from the newborn period. The first examination should be done in
the neonatal room by an experienced nurse or pediatrician. The most
important condition to be checked in this examination is that the red
reflection reflected from the pupil and belonging to the mesh layer is equally
bright and healthy in both eyes. Then, a general eye health examination
should be done in the 6th and 18th months.

In the development process of the child, an ophthalmologist
should be consulted in case of signs such as cross eye, drooping eyelid,
frequent blinking, and rubbing the eyes. If there is an eye disease in the
family, the child should be monitored from birth to prevent this problem from
occurring in the child. Even if their eyes look completely normal from the
outside, every child should have a first eye examination at the age of 3.

Problems such as amblyopia do not give any symptoms
unless they are examined. For this reason, regular eye examination is of
great importance in order to diagnose these complaints early and to take the
necessary precautions. Examinations are repeated at the age of 5 and when
starting school.

Can measurements be made for refractive errors or glasses in babies?

Eye examinations should be performed at all ages from
birth and their vision levels should be measured. There are various tests
and methods for this. One of these methods is to evaluate the light
reflected from the pupil with special cameras and to determine the eye numbers. Visual
levels of children with reading difficulties can be measured by using pictures
and symbols.
