Headache is one of the most common complaints that
physicians hear. Treating a headache doesn’t just mean alleviating the
patient’s suffering. The physician should use all his means to reveal the
underlying cause of the headache and draw a treatment plan accordingly. Because
headache, which can occur due to a wide variety of ailments, may have serious
causes and / or complications that primarily concern neurology.

The fight against headaches begins with identifying the characteristics of the pain. The
physician sometimes asks such detailed and insistent questions that the patient
can often get bored with it. Saying ‘I have a headache’ for patients
summarizes the event in all aspects. However, this is not the case for the
physician, and it should not be. What part of your head hurts the most? Is
it one sided? Is it prominent in the front or the back? Does it
spread? Also the quality of the pain, so throbbing or not? Does it
increase with head movements? Is it stinging or flammable? Are there
internal and / or external factors that initiate, aggravate or alleviate the
severity, response to painkillers, pain? Is it accompanied by nausea, vomiting

increased intracranial pressure. The fact that the headache is unilateral
and throbbing and comes in the form of crises is quite typical for migraine. Facilitating
factors are often present. It may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. There
are many clinical types. A tension headache is a more constant and
widespread pain, not throbbing. It is very likely that there is an
underlying psychopathology. Headache related to increased intracranial
pressure due to diseases of intracranial structures (brain, meninges, vessels)
or other reasons (tumor, meningitis, vascular diseases, etc.) can mimic any
kind of pain. Patients with these diseases often express to the physician
that this is the worst headache they have ever experienced.
