We provide professional support in Tear duct obstruction in babies.
One of the most common eye diseases in newborn babies is
tear duct obstruction. This problem, which is caused by the physiological
structure of babies, often resolves spontaneously without the need for an
external intervention.
The main purpose of our lacrimal glands is to secrete
tears. This secreted tear spreads to the surface of the eye when we blink,
and then flows towards the nose with the mouths of the channels located in the
inner part of our lower and upper eyelids. Tear duct obstruction is the
inability to complete the formation of the duct mouths here. This problem,
which occurs due to the inability of the child to fully maintain the physiological
development in the mother’s womb, usually corrects itself and does not require
any intervention.
In this case, the tear cannot flow through the
tear duct to the nose and flows directly to the cheeks. One of the biggest
effects of this situation occurs in the form of infection. In this case,
eye infections are common. Since the tear cannot be emptied out of the eye
as it should, it begins to hold the bacteria too much. This causes an
infection in the eye. Since burrs are also seen in the eye due to lacrimal
duct obstruction, the possibility of infection increases with burrs.
Frequent tearing in the eyes
Burr more than usual in the eye
Swelling at the root of the nose
Inflammation as a result of pressing on the root of the nose
Families often notice tear duct obstruction with the accumulation of tears in the eye. White
or yellow discharge around the eyes can also be seen frequently. In
addition, after the baby sleeps for a while, the eyelids may stick together due
to burrs.
In some babies, the under-eye area may become
swollen, red, and more sensitive due to inflammation. This condition
usually does not cause permanent damage to babies. Antibacterial drops
recommended by the doctor can be used to prevent infection.
The problem of lacrimal duct obstruction in babies
usually disappears with massage applied in the first year. The massage,
which is applied in the form of stroking downwards from the root of the nose,
is repeated 4 times a day. In the vast majority of babies, this massage
works and there is no need for an intervention afterwards. In case of
burring in the eye during this process, the eye drops recommended by your
doctor should be used.
At the end of 1 year, if the tears and burrs in
the eye do not go away, the ophthalmologist performs probing. If the
complaint does not resolve, a probing procedure is performed again after the
2nd month. If this is not successful, the baby is expected to reach the
third age. After this, an operation called dacryocystorhinostomy is
performed.
