Bursitis and tendinitis are frequently inflamed
(inflammatory) conditions of the soft tissue (ligaments, joint membranes and
tendons) around the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle. Bursitis
is seen as painful swelling in the joint areas. Bursa is a fluid-filled
vesicle that forms on the soft tissue covering a joint or bone. Bursitis
is the inflammation of one of these sacs. This common painful condition
can turn into an acute or chronic condition if inflammation is not prevented.
The most common cause of bursitis is overuse or direct
impact of the joint. Tendinitis is the inflammation in the connective
tissues called tendons. Connective tissues transmit the movements in the
muscles to the bone and allow the bone to move. They are found throughout
the body. There are small tendons in the body as well as large tendons
such as the Achilles tendon in the heel. Tendinitis occurs as a result of
frequent injury to the affected area. Both conditions are related to
age. Aging can disrupt the integrity of the tendon and make it more prone
to injury.
Both situations are more common in people in professions
such as carpenters, gardeners, musicians, and athletes. In addition,
inflammation, arthrosis (calcification), gout, thyroid disease and diabetes
increase these conditions.
The first step in treating these conditions is to reduce
pain and inflammation. For this, ice application in the acute period, not
being used actively in the aching area, rest using various bandages and
orthoses, pain relievers, cortisone injections for the aching area, regional
massage and physical therapy methods are applied. Stretching, relaxation
and strengthening exercises should be done with these treatments. If there
is still no improvement after 6 – 12 months or if the tendon is completely
ruptured, surgical intervention is applied.
