Almond surgery (tonsillectomy)

Tonsillitis, one of the most common causes of fever in
childhood, usually progresses with symptoms such as fever, weakness, malaise
and joint pain. Frequent tonsill infections, especially in children, can
cause adenoid enlargement, snoring, sleep apnea (pause in sleep), fluid
accumulation and hearing loss in the middle ear, which we call otitis media
with effusion, and if not intervened, it can lead to deafness. Frequent
infections reduce the quality of life of the child and family and cause them to
drop out of school. It can also cause damage to organs by causing frequent
medication use.

However, sometimes it can lead to more acute and more
dangerous conditions such as abscess (peritonsillar abscess, retropharyngeal
abscess), heart rheumatism (acute rheumatic fever), joint rheumatism (infective
endocarditis), febrile convulsion, and may have fatal consequences. Having
tonsillitis infections more than 4-5 a year is a relative indication for tonsil
surgery. So it is decided together with the family. However, it is
not recommended to wait after serious complications develop. In our
institution, we perform tonsillectomy with an operation for about half an hour
under general anesthesia. People who have had tonsil surgery will not have
tonsillitis again. A special diet is given for about 1 week -10 days after
tonsil surgery. You are asked to stay away from hard, hot and acidic
foods.
