Conservative (Restorative) Dental Treatments.
What is dental diseases and treatment?
Conservative treatment is a form of treatment that restores the function and aesthetics that
the patient has lost by repairing material losses caused by decay or other
reasons in the hard tissues of the tooth.
What Is Tooth Decay?
When the teeth are not brushed enough, a layer of bacteria forms on the surface of the
tooth. These bacteria digest food residues in the mouth (bread, crackers,
chips, chocolate, etc.) and provide acid formation. These acids dissolve the
hard tissues of the tooth (enamel and dentin) to form a caries. Over time,
tooth decay progresses, causing cavities, and these cavities never heal on
their own. If they are not treated, they grow and cause serious material loss
in the tooth.
Acids constantly attack the surface of the tooth. Elements such as saliva, fluoride
strengthen teeth and delay the formation of caries. Saliva attempts to
strengthen the teeth against decay by depositing the minerals it contains on
the tooth surface. In addition, fluoride found in drinking water and toothpaste
also strengthens teeth against decay.
Should Amalgam (silver) fillings be replaced with composite (white) fillings?
The Amalgam can be replaced with composite (white) fillings if new bruises are detected
under or on the edge of the fillings.
Composite fillings, which were not applied in the past on the grounds that they were not
intact in the posterior group of teeth, have been developed today and made as
robust as amalgam fillings. Composite fillings are now used frequently and
safely in the front and back regions according to the need.
What should I do to prevent tooth decay?
Brush the entire surface of your teeth regularly in a circular motion, avoiding back‐
and‐forth or up-and-down movements in a
single area.
Choose a medium hard toothbrush.
Use a toothpaste that contains fluoride and has few corrosive substances.
Do not brush your teeth immediately after consuming acidic foods and drinks. Just
rinse your mouth with water. Brush your teeth after 1-2 hours.
Reduce snacks between meals.
Drink plenty of water if you are using drugs that reduce the amount of saliva.
Check with your dentist twice a year.
But it is important to remember that gum disease does not only occur from lack of
oral care. Gum disease can also be caused by misalignment of teeth, the
presence of rotten teeth in the mouth, the presence of false or poorly made
veneers, and by faulty chewing forces. You may also become more prone to gum
disease during pregnancy or along with some systemic diseases such as diabetes.
Brushing teeth too hard,
Excessive consumption of acidic foods and beverages,
Hard toothbrushes,
Use of false toothbrushes and paste (which has more than abrasive property),
Tooth wringing and gnashing.
In most cases, the treatment of gum disease is simple. The first treatment usually
consists of professional cleaning done by the dentist using special tools and
devices to remove the plaque and stones around the tooth tissues. The first
step of treatment is to decontaminate the teeth with the help of a brush, floss
and an interface brush.
The surgical procedures performed under local anesthesia are called peridontal
operations in order to treat enlarged, pulled gums, cavities that have occurred
due to the melting of the alveolar bone, and bone melts. In these operations,
auxiliary biomaterials such as membrane, bone graft are used to target the
re-formation of lost tissues. Operations need to be checked at intervals of 3-6
months after.

If there is too much material loss due to tooth decay, have your teeth treated
with composite or porcelain restorations.
To prevent tooth wear caused by clenching and creaking, have your dentist make a
night plaque.
