Retinopathy of prematurity is one of the health problems seen in the eyes of premature

Eye examination should be done between 1-2 months after
birth. Success in the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity, which has 5
stages from mild to severe, is related to the stage of the disease.
Follow-up
is sufficient in the first two stages, and laser and cryo treatment is required
from the third stage. The disease gives the best treatment result in the
third stage. In very advanced stages, successful results may not be
obtained in operations.
The first examination of premature babies in the risk
group should be done between the postconceptional 31-33 weeks and 4-6 weeks
after birth. The frequency of follow-up examinations is planned according
to the stage of ROP, and babies are followed until retinal vascularization
develops.
Before the examination, drops are definitely applied to
dilate the pupils. The examining doctor uses an ophthalmoscope for a wider
view. An anesthetic drop is placed in the eyes of the baby for a more
comfortable examination. During the examination, some special tools are
also supported to keep the eyelids open.
